So I feel like I should preface this post saying that I have very little sewing experience. I once sewed a pocket onto a t-shirt and that's about it. But with the Fourth of July coming, and the fact that I have an obsession with Gatsby wearing bow ties, I wanted him to look festive for the party we put on last night. I couldn't justify taking 10$ out of our budget to go buy him a bow tie so that left me improvising. I used a dress I was planning on taking to Goodwill and an old chambray shirt that had worn out for the fabric, and WAH-LAH! A free bow tie. So here's how I made it:
Materials:
two 8"X8" squares + 2 small strip of fabric
scissors
needle and thread
super glue
an iron
felt
one rubber band
Take your fabric that you've cut out and fold in the edges so that they are straight and crisp. Make sure you fold them in at least an inch to keep them tucked in. Iron them flat so that they are crisp. You may want to use starch if it is a thin fabric. Then, fold the fabric into 3 sections so that it makes a small rectangle about 1 3/4 inches tall and about 4 inches wide.
Pinch your bow in the middle and sew, sew, sew. You want it to be very firm in the middle since your stitches here are actually what will be holding it together. The fabric you will wrap around the middle is just for show. Once this is accomplished, you can wrap the other strip of fabric around the middle to hide the stitches and sew that together in the back.
Take your felt and cut out a circle about the size of a quarter. Sew your rubber band on it. The rubber band is how you will attach it to your dog's collar.
Super glue this onto the back side of the bow. You'll want the rubber band to run up and down, not side to side. Put it on your pretty pup
and BOOM! You have a super cute and easy to make FREE doggie bow tie. Flip his collar around, and it's just a regular bow, for those who have girl dogs. I was thrilled with how it turned out and will definitely be making more since it was so easy! I hope everyone enjoyed their Fourth of July as much as we did :)
